Ameya Pisupati

Ameya is an artist whose practice involves making blue batik pieces and animations. By making entirely blue work, Ameya studies the interaction of different shades of blue in her work. She uses the time spent during the laborious processes of batik and animation to make calculated decisions about the different blues being used in her work. Blue is a material and a medium for her work. The colour blue is just as essential as wax and dye are to her batik pieces and her hand-drawn frames are to her animations. Ameya also researches different proportions of wax through experimentation in her batik work. She studies the different effects and each of her batik pieces influences and inspires the next. Ameya creates blue spaces with installations where the interaction of different blues can be appreciated through the intricate processes of batik and animation.

Ameya’s work draws on work by artists such as Citra Sasmita, Nour Jaouda and Derek Jarman and their use of textiles and their use of blue in their work.

Ameya is an international artist based in Leeds and Hyderabad.
