I am a dual-disciplinary artist who combines photography and painting to transform feelings, thoughts, dreams and ideas into abstract visual expressions. I aim to create impressions that lack certainty and provoke a questioning of what, why, when and how they came to be.
There are layers of experience and perception involved in my images. I am interested in the interaction between these layers and how the meaning of an image can change and evolve with the presence of multiple perspectives. The viewer’s experience of my images is important to me, as I intend to create a unique viewing experience for each person, which allows them to see something of their own within the uncertainty. Both my photographs and my paintings are intuitive, self-reflective and representative of the elements of my being that do not take a physical form. Through my work, I intend to bring the inside, outside.
My process often starts with photographing using a digital camera to document myself, other people and places that will complement the bringing to life of an intangible thing. I use Vaseline or plastic wrap to cover the lens, which allows me to focus on the colours and shapes of the subject as opposed to its details and form. I then utilise creative tools in Photoshop to distort, skew and layer shapes, colours and textures. When I feel that the idea has not been fully realised with a finished photograph, I turn to oil painting, as it allows me full control of the manipulation of an image. I intend to create images that are distinctively unique and personal, and painting allows me the intuitive freedom to work towards this.
