Yasmeen Soliman

I am an artist who works primarily through drawing, using it to illustrate and explore concepts of artistic labour, time, and the human relationship to architecture.

Process is integral to my art: I want to, and find satisfaction in, repeating the action of drawing or colouring in for hours, with the visible lines signifying the action of my hand and the time it spent making something.

Drawing becomes a craft in its ancient sense, something that insists on and is characterized by taking up time. The line itself becomes a motif in my work, with its shapeshifting properties in gathering and making up forms. I embrace the wonkiness and imperfectness of drawing, finding in it a charm and intimacy that not only give my drawings a sense of movement and dynamism that contradicts their flat materiality, but remain as signs of the maker behind them.
