Yi Hua Liu

I am a weaving artist interested in nature. In my works, land nurtures humanity underpins civilization, with cultural legacy imprinting itself visually through motifs like ancient architecture’s woodcarvings, stone carvings, and porcelain patterns—all manifestations of cultural depth.

My art integrates natural plant forms and textures, employing diverse media such as oil painting, watercolor, weaving, and installation art. These visual elements intertwine to shape my interpretation of the earth. Drawing on the Five Elements theory from the I Ching and contemplating nature’s unity, I explore weaving techniques to craft unique textures that symbolize riverbanks, flora, and life. The transition from flat to 3D forms marks a pivotal evolution in my creative journey, with bold oil strokes in 2D works and weaving fused with installation art in 3D sculptures, utilizing varied materials.

To elevate visual elements, I incorporate the Five Elements into installations, presenting woven works in 3D and distilling elemental essences like metal’s strength and wood’s vitality. Through holistic 3D manifestations, I reveal cultural heritage and philosophical insights underlying each piece.

This artistic practice roots itself in the earth and culture, blending Eastern and Western philosophies to advance art. It achieves artistic progression through complete 3D installations, resonating with viewers and prompting reflections on cultural legacy and the vitality of the earth.
